Australia to deploy hundreds of troops to Iraq to fight Islamic State

Hundreds of troops will leave Australia on Wednesday to join the U.S.-led fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Tuesday morning.

The deployment of 330 Australian soldiers to the war-torn region had been announced on March 5 by the Australian government and the troops have been undertaking training locally in preparation for the deployment.

The majority of Army personnel will come from Brisbane’s 7th Brigade and join 100 New Zealand and U.S. troops in the Middle East, in what is being called the "Building Partner Capacity (BPC) mission," the government announced. Read more...
